".... Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God ..." Phil 3:13-14
I was playing at our church's Quarterly Golf Fellowship last Thursday . My buggy mate hit a lousy stroke at one of the holes. He duffed the shot and the ball ran just a few metres ahead. He took the next shot. It was a good stroke. The ball flew far and straight.
When he came onto the buggy, he let out a loud sight, lamenting that he had hit a lousy shot. Suddenly, the word of the Lord came to me.
I told him that he just hit a fantastic shot and should rejoice in that. The last lousy shot was gone forever. No amount of lamenting, sighing and unhappiness will bring it back. I asked him to "hit forward" instead.
Golf can teach us many practical lessons in life. This is one poignant one.
As the Apostle Paul clearly articulated to the Philippians ... "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead ..", let us not live life with baggages from the past.
Incidentally, my pastor preached a similar message on Sunday. He advised that we must "put the past in the past". God told the faithful ones to forget the former things and do not dwell on the past. He said that He is doing a new thing for them! (Isaiah 43:17-19)
Indeed, let us be constantly reminded that God is doing a new thing in our life. Let us strain toward the goal to win God's prize. Let us live for His glory!
I will end with a quotation my pastor used on Sunday:
Yesterday is a cancelled cheque. Forget about it.
Tomorrow is a promisory note. Do not depend on it.
Today is cash. Use it!
Live every day for Him.
God bless.
Steven
