Have no purpose of our own

Luke 18:31

Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.

For Jesus, going to Jerusalem was for only one purpose - to fulfill all things that were written by the prophets concerning Him. Put it plainly, He was going to set Himself up to be sacrificed as the Lamb that would cleanse the sins of the world.

From man's perspective, Jesus was walking into a trap that would take His life.

But God's purpose is always higher than man's.

Our Lord did not come to earth with a purpose of His own. In everything that He did while on earth, it was for fulfilling the purpose that His Father had sent Him for. He knew it right from the beginning and He was determined to fulfill it.

In His human capacity, He struggled. On the Mount of Olives, He prayed in agony, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42).

Oswald Chambers taught that, "What God calls us to cannot be definitely stated, because His call is simply to be His friend to accomplish His own purposes. A Christian is someone who trusts in the knowledge and the wisdom of God, not in his own abilities. If we have a purpose of our own, it destroys the simplicity and the calm, relaxed pace which should be characteristic of the children of God."

What do we consider as our purpose in life?

Let's make it to be a yearning to be obedient to God's calling for us to fulfill His purpose. Let's make this our one and only purpose as we continue on our pilgrimage.

God bless.
