Joshua 24 - Choose whom you will serve !

Click to read Joshua 24

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

Before Joshua, the nation was told of all the things that God had done for Israel. They were reminded that God had kept and fulfilled all His promises to them. Joshua also challenged the nation to be faithful to God and asked them to choose. He declared those famous words, ".... as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." This passage ends with Joshua and the nation of Israel making a covenant at Shechem to faithfully serve the Lord.

Major Verses

V14-18 -
The people had to decide whether they would obey God, or, obey the pagan's idols. It was a choice that each of them had to make. Joshua declared that he and his household chose to serve God. And so did the nation.

What I learnt

We also have to choose who we want to serve. There are three common choices : 1) God, 2) ourself, 3) gods of the world. It is easy, if we are not careful, to slip into a quiet rebellion against God as we go about life in our own way. Worst still, we may slip into associations with the world's belief. To keep the heavenly road, we must constantly affirm our choice of believing in the true God, our loving Abba Father. Let's affirm this choice on a daily basis.

V23 - 27 - Joshua asked the nation to "throw away the foreign gods and yield your hearts to the Lord, God of Israel." The people obeyed and Joshua made a covenant for the people and used a large stone as a visual reminder of their choice.

What I learnt

A choice to follow God, requires one to destroy whatever that gets in the way of worshiping Him. All of us has our own form of idols; greed, self, wrong priorities, prejudices, jealousies etc. These get in the way of worshiping God. God is not satisfied that we just hide these idols, He wants us to get rid of them completely. We need to make a choice and remember that we had chosen to serve Him. It would be impossible to do it with our own strength. Ask the Holy Spirit's help to overcome the temptation to go back to our old ways after we have chosen to serve Him. He will not fail us! Praise the Lord

Summary

The book of Joshua brought to us an understanding of God's faithfulness to His people. God kept and fulfilled every promise He made with Abraham and Moses for Israel. It also tells us about the need to trust Him completely. Obedience is the key to a God-given successes. Afterall, God is the One fighting the battle for us.

Joshua and Caleb stood out to be the faithful servants who believed God's word to the dot. With God's strength, their youthfulness and courage never left them; age did not weaken their body nor their mind. They believed God's words and acted upon them diligently.

Joshua preached a consistent message to Israel, and to us all. That message is "God is faithful and will keep all His promises to us, only be strong and courageous and choose to serve Him."

I don't know. I have posted my learnings for the last 6 months. I had hope that I would draw discussions and mutual encouragements from readers. Unfortunately, this seemed not to be the case. In fact, I do not even know if anyone is reading this blog as there is no comment or response.

I am not disappointed. In keeping a weekly schedule for this blog, the Lord had blessed me with my own understanding of His words. I am glad that I blogged my learnings, for in doing so, I learnt much from Him and about Him.

God bless ... for indeed, the word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light for our path (Psm 119:105).

Joshua 23 - A Consistent Message

Click to read Joshua 23

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

Joshua was very old and knew that he was going to pass on soon. He summoned the people and gave one final farewell message to them. The message was a consistent one..."Be strong, obey the Lord, God had fulfilled all His promises, do not stray from Him."

Major Verses

V6-13 -
Joshua reminded the nation of 3 areas of importance: (1) to follow God's laws, (2) not to be associated with the pagans, and (3) not to intermarry with the pagans. He had to remind them because these temptations were sitting right in their backyard as they did not drive them out of the Promised Land in the first place.

What I learnt

We must be very aware of our surroundings and association and our weaknesses. With that clear understanding, we can then form a strategy to overcome the temptations. The bible instructs us to "
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7). Submitting ourselves to God also means not to purposefully put ourselves in compromising situations. Resisting needs us to know where we can be weak and thus attacked.

Joshua lived an exemplary life of one who was absolutely faithful to God. He left a legacy for us all to follow.

Summary

God is faithful to us. He keeps His promises and fulfills each of them. We have to play our part to be faithful to Him. And following Joshua's words, we need to "be very strong;
be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left."

Joshua 22 - Checking before Acting

Click to read Joshua 22

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

The tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh were given land on the east of River Jordan. However, these people were asked to help the other tribes conquer Canaan. They did so diligently. Now that all was done, Joshua commended them and allowed them to return to their land, which on the other side of the river.

As these tribes returned to the east, they built an altar near the river bed. The rest of Israel thought that they were forming their own religion and leaving the true God. Fearing the consequences of God's wrath upon the whole nation, the rest of the tribes wanted to war against these three tribes. Thankfully, they followed Godly instructions (see Deut 13:12-18) to conduct a thorough investigation before acting. By so doing, they averted a civil war which would have been based on a misunderstanding.

The Reubenites, Gadites and Manasseh built the altar not to offer burnt offering s and sacrifices (which would mean breaking faith with the nation). They did so as a reminder to all and especially their future generations that they worship the same God with their brothers across the river. They were concerned that without a visible sign of unity between the east and west settlements, future generations might see conflict between them.

Major Verses

V4-5 - Joshua reminded them that obedience to God should be based on their love for God. This was the same message Moses gave to the Israelites in Deuteronomy.

What I learnt

It is our duty and mission to love our God and obey His instructions. We must not forget
who we are to be in Christ because we think too much of what we are to do!

V13-32 - Phinehas, the priest led a delegation of community leaders (a representative of each of the other tribes) to investigate them. They clarified the position and averted a civil war that could have erupted out of a misunderstanding.

What I learnt

God had told us to clarify before acting. It will always be to our advantage if we obey God's words. Many misunderstandings in churches, with friends and even family members happen because we choose to jump to our own conclusions and not investigate the matter thoroughly before acting. Some one once said, "Those who jump into conclusion normally lands in a pile of shit."

Summary

We must not forget the reason for our existence - to love and worship God. And in that process, obedience to Him will be a definite result. We must take God's instruction carefully. This lesson has taught us that while we carry out His instructions, we must also check thoroughly before acting.

Joshua 21 - Levites and their township

Click to read Joshua 21

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

The Levites were not given land like the rest of the tribes for good reasons. They were appointed to focus on serving God and the people. They should not be worried about fending for themselves. Secondly, since the nation had inherited a vast amount of land in Canaan, Jerusalem (where the temple was to be established) was far away for some of the tribes. As such, the Levites were given towns with pasture land in each of the tribes' territory. By so doing, the Levites were within reach of ALL people in less than a day's journey and thus the Levites could minister to them appropriately.

Major Verses

V43-45 - These verses declared that God had delivered the land according to His promise. Not just that, He also delivered every promise He had made to His people. Some of those promises took time to come to past, but came to past they all did. V45 says "Not one of all the Lord's good promises to His house of Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled."

What I learnt

God fulfills His every promise to us according to His time table. While there will be times we wait impatiently, we must know that His words are sure. In fact, as we learn to constantly count our blessings and remember God's fulfillment of past promises, we can be strengthened to trust Him for the future. That is why it is always good to give our testimony of God's goodness, as it not only encourages others but also will re-affirm His goodness within our hearts.

Men's problem is impatience; we want Him to act NOW and according to our idea of how the outcome should be like. Instead, we should learn to fully trust Him and let Him lead us into the future, in His time.

Summary

As we recall and share of God's goodness and count our blessings, we re-affirm that He fulfills His promises to us. It will give us more confidence to continue to trust Him as we walk into the future.

Joshua 20 - Cities of Refuge

Click to read Joshua 20

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

God had instructed Moses to designate 6 out of the 48 cities/towns that were allotted to the people, to be cities of refuge (Num 35:6-8). Those cities were needed to protect the innocent, who might have accidentally killed another person. In ancient customs of justice, revenge was the norm. However, God had planned a system of government that would both express His mode of justice and show His mercy. The Levites were to be supervisors of those cities as they were expected to be impartial judges.

This was how the cities of refuge worked:

  1. A person who accidentally killed another can seek refuge in any of those cities until a fair trial could be convened.
  2. Being admitted into a city of refuge kept him safe from the avenger till he got a hearing.
  3. The elder of the city had to conduct a preliminary hearing at the city gate to determined if there was a case to accept the refugee.
  4. If the killing was judged to be accidental, the refugee would be kept in the city for his own safety. He would live there until the death of the high priest. Thereafter, he would be free to go.
  5. If judged to have committed murder, the refugee would be delivered to the avengers.

What I learnt

God's law and mercy go hand-in-hand. While He must uphold justice, He also provides mercy and grace. For us, He provided the path for us to escape His eternal wrath upon sinners by delivering His Son to pay for the "murder" of holiness by mankind. He judged and declared believers with the verdict of "not guilty" by making Jesus guilty on our behalf. We are safe in His city of eternal refuge for eternity as our High Priest lives. Hallelujah !

Summary

We can rest in His city of eternal refuge when we believe in Christ Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. Do not doubt for a second that He will send us to the pit of hell ever. Our High Priest lives on for eternity, and so will us, with Him!.

Joshua 18 & 19 - Dividing the rest of the land

Click to read Joshua 18-19

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

Up till the last two chapters, only 4 tribes were allotted the land. Shiloh was made the religious centre. The tabernacle was set up permanently there and would remain for the next 300 years. Seven other tribes had not taken possession of the land. Joshua gave instruction for the land survey to be done. The rest of the land were then allotted through a sacred lottery. By so doing, God, and not Joshua (or any other man) would make the choice.

By that time, the remaining Canaanites were no longer a threat to Israel. However, instead of fulfilling God's command to destroy all of them, the Israelites chose the easy way out. They co-inhabited with them. That decision eventually led to many pains that the nation would suffer.

Major Verses

Chapter 18:3-6 -
Joshua questioned the remaining seven tribes as to why they had not possessed the land. Eventually, Joshua had to order a survey of the land and "push" the tribes to take possession. No specific instructions were given by God through Moses on the way the remaining land was to be divided for these tribes. As such, Joshua ordered the
tribes' representatives to survey the land and divide them into seven parcels.

What I learnt

Procrastination is a burden to us. We must forge ahead to do what we must do in life. Joshua was a leader that was determined to forge ahead and complete God's commands.

Chapter 18:8 -
Joshua wanted God's hand on the decision. As such, casting of lots to divide the remaining land was used. Making decisions by casting lots was a common practice then. Little is known about the methods used though. However, the prime reason was that the process removed human choice from the decision making process and allowed God to decide. This is a sacred lottery process and the Israelites accepted the results as directions from God. The acceptance also demonstrated their reliance and faith in God. This is not to be mixed up with the modern day money lottery which is dependent on chance and driven by greed.

What I learnt

We must trust God to direct our path. The Israelites used the sacred lottery process many times and took the results as God's direction. We have the Holy Spirit to guide us. Whether we are able to listen to the Holy Spirit's instructions directly or use sacred lottery of sorts when we are seeking His directions, what is most relevant and important is our reliance on Him and faith in Him resulting in us carrying out the instructions given as a result of seeking His direction.

Chapter 19:47-48 - The Dannites took the easy way out. Instead of over coming the enemy and claiming what was allotted to them, they let the difficulty overwhelm them. As such, they gave up what they had inherited for a place called Leshem instead. They disobey God once again!

What I learnt

Many can claim to trust God when the path is smooth or when the going is good. But when things do not go smoothly and difficulties loom, our faith and courage are put to the test. We must have our eyes focused on Him and His faithfulness and goodness all the time. More so and especially when the going becomes tough. And we must always remember that God is good all the time and that He will help us over come the difficulties and reward us with the best.

Summary

God always has the best of our interests in His hands. We must trust His absolute judgment and command. Disobeying Him only brings disasters to ourselves. On the contrary, relying and obeying Him will always bring success to our life. When the going gets tough, rely and trust in our Abba Father!

Joshua 16 & 17 - More lessons from the division of the land

Click to read Joshua 16-17

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

Chapters 16 and 17 recorded the land allocation for Joseph’s descendants, Manasseh and Ephraim. They had the largest portion of the land allotted. As Joseph was Jacob’s eldest son by Rachel, he received a double portion of inheritance. Thus, he did not have a tribe named after himself, but that of his two sons. The largest territory and with the greatest influence in northern Israel belonged to these two tribes.

Major verses

Chapter 17:3-4 Zelophehad son of Hepher was the great-great grandson of Joseph. He had no sons but 5 daughters. Traditionally, only men were allotted lands. By allotting the 5 daughters of Zelophehand land, Moses broke tradition as he put justice ahead. God told Moses to add a law then. That law would help other women under similar circumstances and be justly taken care of.

What I learnt

It is easy to refuse an honorable request by citing tradition or current practice or even saying “this has never been done before”. But it is best to consider the purpose of each law and the merits before deciding. We can look to Moses and Joshua as examples of putting justice ahead of tradition and do the right things instead of doing the things “right”.

Chapter 17:14-15 – The Manassites, though given much land, did not bother to drive out the Canaanites living in their land. They did not obey God’s command in this area (V12). Yet they complaint to Joshua and asked for more land. Joshua correctly passed the problem back to them and asked them to claim the land that was occupied by the Canaanites. Unlike Caleb, the Manassites had a contrasting attitude. While Caleb claimed and acted, the Manassites simply complained. Caleb was full of confidence that God would help him drive the wicked enemies out of his land. On the other hand, the Manassites let the enemies stay and simply asked for more.

What I learnt

When God gives us a promise, we must act to claim it. He will always do the big battle for us and we need only to act in faith. We must demonstrate our faith in His faithfulness by believing it in the first place.

Summary

We must stand in faith to do the right things and also act to claim the promises that our Heavenly Father has laid out for us. Instead of complaining, let’s act in faith to believe all that He has promised us.

Joshua 15 - Lessons from the division of the land

Click to read Joshua 15

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

The division of the land continued and went according to the instructions given to Moses. This chapters recorded the division of land for the clans of Judah. Those instructions given by God were so specific such that there would be no excuse for no following them. Caleb was allotted Hebron and he drove the Anakites of Hebron out of the land. He was one of those who obeyed God's original command. Caleb was almost 90 years of age when he led the conquest. He had declared that his strength came from the Lord.

Major verses

V17 - Othniel, son of Kenaz, became Caleb's son-in-law after he took up Caleb's challenge to drive out the enemies in Debir. Eventually, he became the first of Israel's judges and played a significant role in reforming Israel by chasing away the enemy. Caleb's legacy of faithfulness to God continued in Othniel's life.

What I learnt

As leaders and parents, we have legacies that we will, knowingly or otherwise, pass on to our followers and children. Faithfulness to God is probably the most important legacy that we could and should pass on to them. As such, we must be determined to be faithful to God in the first place.

V63 - The people of Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites from their land. Unlike Caleb, it was probable that they did not do enough to want to go to war to dislodge them. Consequently, the Jebusites live amongst them. This was against God's command.

What did the Jebusites represent? Jebus means a threshing place and comes from the Hebrew root word "swb" which means "to thread down, trample (of warriors) and of rejection". As such, keeping the Jebusites with them tantamount to being threaded down and rejected. Jebus was the early name of Jerusalem.

What I learnt

When we disobey God's instructions, we will eventually suffer the consequences. It is not that God wants to punish us, but that we choose not to obey His ways which will bring us success. Like Caleb, we must learn to be completely faithful to God and to follow His instructions exactly. The Holy Spirit will help us do that, if we want Him to!

Summary

God gave specific instructions to the Israelites for the division of the land so that there would be no excuse for disobedience. When we obey God, we live in the successful path He has laid for us. When we do otherwise, we walk in our own ways that are usually full of difficulties.

Joshua 14 - Caleb, the faith-ful man

Click to read Joshua 14

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links on the side bar. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section.)

Synopsis

The division of the land continued. The most important portion of this chapter is the words of Caleb. He reiterated his faith in God and also claimed the land promised to him 40 years ago. Caleb was one of the two "adults" in their generation that did not see death during the journey in the wilderness.

Major verses

V5 - "So the Israelites divided the land just as the Lord had commanded Moses." This act itself is amazing. The land was divided exactly as God had instructed Moses years before. Joshua, the leader of the nation, did not change a word of that instruction. He simply followed God's command given to Moses. And he followed it to the dot!

What I learnt

In our lives, we often follow God's words only when it suits us. There are times when we even ignore them completely, especially when the "demands" seem harsh. We must learn to be like Joshua. We must follow God's instruction to the dot. And this is only for our own good.

V6-13 - Caleb was specially honored by the Lord (Num 14:24 & Deut 1:34-36). God said that he had a different spirit from the rest, one that was faithful to Him. As such, he was blessed with a special inheritance - being one of only two from his generation that would posses the Promised Land. Though the land allotted to him still had giants inhabiting them, Caleb was full of confidence that he can subdue and drive them out.

What I learnt

We must trust God all the way. Like Caleb, faith in God must transcend all circumstances before us, because God is faithful and honors those who honor Him. We honor Him by having faith in Him.

V11 - "I am as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I am as vigorous to go to battle now as I was then." Caleb's proclamation showed his unwavering faith in God. He saw strength not from the eyes of a human. Though he was about 85 years old then, he saw himself having the strength of a young man. He was not boasting about his own strength, but he was reaffirming the strength of the Lord in him.

What I learnt

85 years old and still growing strong! That's what we can and shall be as we trust God in our lives. Retirement has no place in our service to God. Let's not give the excuse of stopping our service to God just because we think that we are old. God can use any one, young and old, male or female, as long as we trust in Him.

Summary

Caleb and Joshua demonstrated their faith in God. They were aptly rewarded with the possession of the Promised Land while all in their generation did not. Their faith in God gave them the inheritance.

Joshua 13 - God gives more land

Click to read Joshua 13

(The previous 9 chapters can be accessed through the links from the side bars. To access chapters before those listed, go to the All Chapters section on the side bar.)

Synopsis

After 7 years of war and many places conquered, God told Joshua that there was more land to conquer. Joshua was between 90-100 years old then. God declared that He will drive the enemies out Himself. Though not in the hands yet, God wanted Joshua to allocate the land to the people as though the land belonged to them (v6-7).

Major Verses

V 1-6 - Though Joshua was already very old, God did not stop using his services. Unlike many cultures which glorify the young and neglect the old, God does not look at age as a determining factor for service.

What I learnt

We should never think of "retiring" for God's service just because of age. It is God's decision, not ours. Let's serve Him faithfully till He says to rest.

V7 - Though there were lands unconquered, God wanted them allocated to the people as well. His desire was for Israel to take the land eventually. While God had given the land, He wanted the people to act and receive the inheritance. Though God had declared the victory, the people still needed to go to battle (to act) and take the land.

What I learnt

We have "unconquered" territories to win over. These could be our unsaved relatives, friends or colleagues, or areas of our lives that we need to get right with or ....While God has given us the victory, we need to act in faith to take those lands. Until we act in faith and in obedience, these lands will never be ours to keep.

V13 -When Moses defeated Gashur and Maacah in Gilead, he did not cleansed the place of all the pagan practising inhabitants. So, these pagan continued living among the Israelites and caused problems for them (as recorded in the Book of Judges).

What I learnt

After coming to Christ, many of us fail to remove completely the sinful practises of our past. The consequences will come to haunt us. While our sins were completely forgiven, we must make it our priority to focus on the Lord and have nothing to do with sin. With this attitude, God will help us to be more like Christ as we go through His sanctification process.

V33 - The tribe of Levites were not given any land. They were dedicated to serving God and had to be mobile in order to visit the different tribes. Making them land owners would bog them down and make them ineffective. So God arranged for all other tribes to supply the Levites with their needs through donations so that they could focus on serving God and the tribes.

What I learnt

The full-time workers of the Lord need to be dedicated to serving God and His people. We must support them by bringing supplies into the house of God so that their physically needs would not become obstacles to their service. This is a good reason to tithe to the church. We should go beyond tiding and bless the workers with other supplies whenever we have opportunities to do so.

Summary

God does not expect us to "retire" from our service to Him just because of age. We must continue to serve Him according to His timing and plan. There is more land to be taken. While God has given the victory, we must act to inherit the land. Let's put our hearts and minds into taking those land...

Synopsis

The conquest was almost complete after the last major battle. God delivered His promise to His chosen nation to inherit the land. Most of Canaan was theirs and this chapter is a summary of the first half of the book of Joshua - the victories that God gave to Moses (land east of River Jordan) and Joshua (land west of River Jordan). In all, Moses conquered 2 kingdoms while Joshua brought down 31 kings.

What I learnt

As long as Joshua and the people trusted and obeyed God, all enemy was removed by Him. So it is for us, as we continue to trust and obey Him, we can be assured that He will win the battle for us. Hallelujah!

Next Up ...

The next 7 chapters (13 to 19) record the division of the Promise Land to the tribes. The starting position was :
1) that all tribes except the Levites would be allotted land as instructed by God through Moses,
2) tribes of Reuben and Gad and half tribe of Manasseh were already allotted land on the east side of the river,
3) tribes of Judah and Joseph received land that Jacob had promised.

The remaining land was divided by casting lot but it was not a lucky draw - God's hand was upon the division. Coming up on 19th Feb ....

Joshua 11 - Victory at the Ultimate Battle

Click to read Joshua 11

(Request - Please leave your comments after reading this blog. Bless others with your own sharing too. Click "Comments" right at the end of this page. Thanks.)

Synopsis

The ultimate battle was being hatched by King Jabin of Hazor, who sought the support of a dozen of the northern kings. Together, they formed what seemed to be a formidable army with overwhelming strength compared with Israel's. As before, the Lord assured Joshua and the nation that it was His battle. "The LORD said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel, slain. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.'" (v6).

God commanded Israel, through Moses and Joshua, to destroy the sinful people. Especially so for Hazor, which symbolised the wicked culture that was anti-God. In the ensuing battle, other cities were spared but Hazor was razed to the ground. And little did Jabin know that while he planned the ultimate battle against Israel, God provided the complete victory for Joshua and the nation, culminating in the completion of the possession of the Promised Land. This was to be the last major battle for them all, after which, the land rested from war.

Major verses

V6-9 - The Lord assured Joshua of victory and that He would deliver the enemies to them, slain! The Lord also gave Joshua an instruction to "hamstring the horses and burn their chariots." Both God and Joshua kept their words.

What I learnt

God desires to give us victory always, He will deliver the enemies into our hand, already slain. This is an assurance that we must always remember. He also demands our obedience to Him, as shown in His instruction to Joshua. Hamstringing the horses and burning the chariots were to be the epilogue in that victory story - it tells me that we get to do the easy part while He does the difficult one for us. Praise the Lord!

V12-15 - Joshua carried out God's command to the tee. God's plan was that, while giving them the Promised Land, He also punished the sinful inhabitants.

What I learnt

We may not see the big picture exactly when God tells us to do certain things in His way. But we can be assured that as long as we obey Him, His plan will be fulfilled and accomplished.

Summary

God desires to deliver victory to our hands. He will do the difficult part and we need only to do the easy one. This is a good deal! While the enemy (or obstacle ahead) may look formidable, we must remember that God is on our side (Rom 8:28-32). In response, we must obey His commands.

Next up ......

In another exciting event, God delivered five kings to Joshua in the same battle. These kings ganged up to attack Gibeon for making the peace treaty with Israel. The Gibeonites called on Joshua to help. Though being deceived into making the treaty, Joshua honored it and came to their rescue. This was really part of God's divine plan. With this one battle, Israel was able to defeat all five kings at the same time. Once again, the Lord assured Israel of victory - the battle belonged to the Lord.

God cause confusion amongst the enemy camp and in fact, more of them died from the hailstone that rained upon them, than by the swords of the Israelites, demonstrating once again God's hands on the battle.

Joshua called for God to hold the sun so that his army can completely destroy the enemy. God listened and held the sun for almost a full day...the first and last time (till now) that such a miracle had happened. Verse 14 records it aptly, "There has never been a day like this before or since, a day that the Lord listen to a man. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel." It resulted in a resounding victory and Joshua gave the credit to God.

Major Verses

V6 - 7 - Joshua and the nation honored the treaty with Gibeon even though they were deceived into it. Joshua did so as he revered and honored God, as the treaty was treated as an oath made before God.

What I learnt

We honor God by keeping our words. Integrity and keeping promises are virtues that honor God.

V12 -14 - Holding the sun in its place prolonged the day so that the Israelites had time to complete the battle. We may not understand how the phenomenon took place, but it did. It was a miracle. More important than the miracle itself was the fact that God listened to Joshua's request. While the battle belonged to the Lord, Joshua took responsibility as commander of the army to rout the enemies.

What I learnt

God will honor us when we honor Him. When we are moving in His will and plan, He will listen and answer our prayers, even if it meant breaking natural laws (qualifier - when we walk in His will, our prayers will be aligned to His plan). That is how much He loves us. But like Joshua, we must still act and take responsibility for what we are doing.

V25 - Before killing the five enemy kings, Joshua gather his people and reminded them not to be discouraged nor afraid (they have more battles to fight) as the Lord would deliver the enemies into their hands. It was a reminder of God's promises and presence with the nation and a motivation to continue.

What I learnt - We must always acknowledge what the Lord has done for us. This is not just to show our thanks to Him, but to raise our confidence level to trust Him even more as we move forward. That's why it is good to always count our blessings, naming them one by one.

Summary

Indeed, God is good all the time. He keeps His promises and goes to the extend of listening to Joshua and holding the sun in place. Joshua in turn acknowledged God in all the victories and encouraged his people to keep trusting God. The battle surely belongs to the Lord, always ! We need to remember our blessings and build up our confidence to trust Him more.

Coming Next ...

Joshua 11 records the ultimate battle with the three northern kings who brought with them overwhelming numbers in their army. Israel still routed them as God was with them. Another exciting chapter coming up on 5th Feb.

Synopsis

News of the Israelites' victory spread across Canaan. Frightened but smart, the Gibeonites devised a deception plan to save themselves from being destroyed by Israel. They tricked Joshua and the leaders into signing a peace treaty with them. They pretended that they were from a far away land though they were actually living right next to the Israelites. Joshua and the leaders made the mistake of not enquiring God, and fell into the Gibeonite's trap. Joshua had to honor the treaty and bear the consequence of that mistake.

Major verses

V3-13 - The Gibeonites, who were living right in Canaan devised a ruse to trick Israel into sparing them. Somehow, they knew that Israel was bent on destroying all the inhabitants of Canaan (a command from God - Joshua 9:24-25)

V14-15 - tells of Joshua's mistake .. "The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord." It was a major mistake as God had specifically commanded them not to sign any treaty with the inhabitants of Canaan (Ex 23:31-33 ; 34:11-12).

What I learnt - Many times we think that we know better. Our logical mind tells us that we are making the right decision based on facts. Facts are not necessarily the truth. Facts feed out human minds, truth feeds our spirit. Truth comes from God. So, unless we learn how to constantly depend on Him, inquire of Him before making decisions, we have a very good chance of making the wrong decisions.

V16-18 - Even though they found out about the deception later, Joshua took the treaty very seriously and honored the treaty as it was an oath was made before God.

What I learnt - We must honor our words, even if we had make a mistake. Such integrity honors God.

V16-18 - By failing to inquire of the Lord before making the decision, Joshua had to face an angry nation (v18) and also to honor an awkward treaty with the Gibeonites.

What I learnt - It is so important to depend on God in our daily life. He is there for me. Why shouldn't I depend on Him, especially when having to make decisions? We must honor God by revering Him consistently. We can do so by constantly depending on Him, inquiring of Him in our decision making. He will never get tired listening to our requests for help and guidance. In fact, He delights in us doing so as it shows our dependence on Him.

Summary

As we learn to inquire of God when making decisions in life, we can be very sure that He will always guide us to the right decisions. Every decision made with reverence to His guidance is the right decision, for He works for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28).

We will see God's power in delivering complete victory to Israel in Joshua 10. Coming up on 29th Jan...

Synopsis

Joshua and the nation acknowledged their sins and purified themselves as instructed by God. As such, God's power was restored upon Israel. God encouraged Joshua to take the city of Ai and instructed for all lives to be destroyed as a punishment for their sins. However, Israel was allowed to take the spoils of war from Ai, unlike in Jericho.

For the battle of Ai, God did not give specific instructions for them to follow, like in Jericho. He gave the strategy to Joshua, that is, to "take the whole army, set up an ambush, kill all the inhabitants and keep the spoils of war". Although assured by God of victory, Joshua took responsibility as Israel's commander to plan for success. He detailed a military plan to his army and for which, God saw the plan to success.

Major Verses

V1 - 2 - Once again, God gave Joshua the assurance of success - "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." were significant words for Joshua. God issued the strategic plan for the battle.

What I learnt - Reassurance from God was very important for Joshua, especially after the failure of the first attack of Ai. God is always ready to forgive us if we acknowledge our failure to Him and repent. He goes beyond that - He reassures us of His presence and the victory He has for us. And He will give us directions for the next move.

V3 - 8 - As the commander of the nation, Joshua took the responsibility to plan for success. He went into the tactical details, and clearly expressing it to the army. However, he was careful to issue the same assurance to his people (v7) that God was the real commander who would give them the victory. He reminded all to obey God's instructions.

What I learnt - God gave us talents and we must use them appropriately. "Appropriately" means that we must listen to Him and work within His guidance. This constant reverence for Him and willingness to listen to Him will assure us of victory.

V14 - 29 - Throughout the battle, Joshua was listening to the Lord's guidance. V18 records that "the Lord said to Joshua ...". This time, the nation followed God's instruction and as such, destroyed Ai completely. They also took the spoils of the war as were allowed by God this time.

What I learnt - The battle, once again, belonged to God. The victory was His. Once sin was dealt with, God's power and victory returned to the nation. I thank God that unlike the old covenant that Israel had with Him, the new one which Jesus gave to us assures us of God's love and His presence at all times.

While we may still fail along the way, our failures do not separate us from God. We must always remember that our Lord and Saviour had done a complete job at Calvary. Because of Him and His sacrifice, God declared that we are His children and specifically that He will "remember our sins NO more!" (Heb 8:12).

This is not to say that we can live licentiously or continue in the old sinful ways. Rather, by acknowledging His love for us and our need for His guidance, we will be spurred to Godly living and greater works for His kingdom. The most important time to remember God's love for us, is at the times when we fail Him. Knowing that He loves us despite our failings will spur us to repent and revere Him more. This will prevent Satan from putting a wedge in our relationship with God.

V30 - 35 - An altar was built with uncut stones to honor the Lord. The reason for using uncut stones was to keep the altar holy; no skills of man were involved. It was also to remind the people that no one should worship any workmanship of the craftsman, but God alone. At the celebration, Joshua made it a point to read the Book of the Law to the entire assembly.

What I learnt - It is always important to revere God and thank Him for our blessings. It keeps our mind focused on the Giver and not the gifts. It is just as important to keep our self refreshed with God's words constantly. Joshua made it a point to read God's words to the nation. We must make it a point to read God's word constantly to our soul and to those around us.

Summary

Because we are saved through the Lord Jesus, God's presence and love are always with us. Let us constantly revere Him and be reminded of His goodness and to read His words. Let us spur each other to be more intimate with Him and to good works daily.

Synopsis

Just after a great victory at Jerico, Joshua and the nation was moving against Ai, a small city. Instead of seeking God's guidance, they decided to do things "on their own". They sent out spies and decided to send a small army to attack the city. They were routed and 36 lives were lost. Fear came upon the people. It caused Joshua and the leaders to question and perhaps even doubt God.

Only when they sought God, did they know what had happened. Achan kept some of the things belonging to the Canaanites. These were all components devoted to the pagan gods of Jerico. Because of his sin, Israel, as nation, suffered the defeat. The nation was frightened and their hearts melted!

While God cannot condone sin, He also provided a way out for them. The people were to re-consecrate themselves before Him and the sinner had to be dealt with.

Achan and his whole household, including the live stocks he owned, were stoned to death and burnt. This may seemed a harsh punishment but it was something that had to be done to preserve Israel's relationship with God and to get His protection. This is especially so when Achan had disobeyed a very important instruction - the cleansing of the land so that Israel would not have to live with the pagans.

Major verses

V6 - 9
- Joshua did not consult God before deciding on attacking Ai. In fact, they depended on their own ability; spying and calculating the strength of the attack force needed. And when he came before God finally, he poured out his heart. It was an earnest complaint about the failure.

What I learnt

We must learn to rely on God completely, even when the task seems easy and are well withing our "human wisdom and strength". Relying on Him completely does not mean not doing anything at all. It means to revere Him in our decision, mindful that He is the controller of all things.

Joshua poured out his grieves and complaint to God. We must also learn to walk so closely to our Abba Father that we can come before Him completely assured that He will listen to our cries for help.

V10 - 13 - Until those offending items, which were devoted to the pagan gods, were removed from the camp, God told Joshua that the nation would not be able to stand against the enemy. God provided a way out for them; to consecrate the people again and to destroy the items.

What I learnt

We must desire to live by God's standard. While in the process of sanctification, we may fall short, we certainly must purpose it in our heart to keep His ways. We cannot serve two masters.

Summary

God's standard requires that all sin be purged. Sin and godliness do not mix and cannot go hand in hand. I thank God for His promise in 2 Cor 5:21 ; "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Hallelujah.

Joshua 6 - The battle belongs to the Lord!

Click to read Joshua 6

Synopsis

Jericho was a well fortified city. Walls up to 25 feet high and 20 feet thick protect the people living in it. It was a symbol of military power and strength at that time. The Canaanites considered the city as impregnable. And yet God directed the Israelites to attack this city first, after their river crossing. God had an interesting way of destroying the city. It tested the faith of the Israelites as well as bring fear to the heart of every Canaanite as He demonstrated His mighty power.

The Israelites had to trust God completely. His instruction required attacking the strongest city without actually attacking it conventionally. It was in a way that no human military strategist would ever do. By simply marching around it over seven days was certainly not a logical way; it was a divine one!

By so doing, God showed that the battle belonged to Him and Him alone. This was to keep the Israelites forever aware that it was He who won the battles for them.

Major Verses

V2 - 7 -
God told Joshua that He had already delivered Jericho into his hands. That meant that the battle was already won and the enemies defeated even before the battle began. Joshua believed completely and acted as God had instructed. Joshua obeyed and instructed the people accordingly.

What I learnt - Our enemy, Satan, is a defeated foe - Christ won decisively at Calvary. Though we may still see sins rampant and sometimes even struggle against sin ourselves, we must remember that we are the proclaimed victors. We must not be terrorised by the power of the defeated enemy. Just as Joshua and the people acted appropriately in God's words, so must we in our daily battle, always remembering that the battle belongs to the Lord!

V8-16 - God gave unconventional battle orders. No weapons of war was needed; only those instruments that were related to the worship of Him. The ark and the trumpets were sufficient. The orders were simple; march around the city once a day for 6 days but not a word from any one. And on the seventh day, march around for 7 times and shout when the trumpets were blown. The sounding of the trumpets was to remind them that their victory came from the Lord. At that, the city walls fell !

What I learnt - Why did God chose to demonstrate His power through the simple marching around the city and specifically for 13 times?

1) God wanted to make it absolutely clear that the battle was His and none of Israel's weapons or expertise would be needed.

2) God's method to destroy Jericho would increase the fear and terror across Canaan and hence make it easier for the people to conquer the rest of the land.

3) This is a test of Israel's faith in God - would they do what the Lord commanded them? Would they put their trust in God despite the circumstances around them?

V17-25 -God demanded that Israel destroyed everything and everyone, except Rahab's household. This was partly to deliver judgement to the Canaanites who had rebelled against God (Jericho was a city entrenched in Baal and idol worship). Another reason was that they were a threat to Godly living and so everything had to be removed in order not to affect the Israelites as they occupy the land. Even Rahab's household had to be placed outside the camp.

What I learnt
- Rahab and her household were spared because she had faith in God. Everything else was destroyed. For us, when we devote ourselves to God, we ought to throw out all habits and thoughts that are not acceptable to God too. We must work hard to ensure that we are not putting ourselves in places or positions that would allow sin to tempt us.

Summary

The battle belongs to the Lord - all we need to do is to trust Him completely. What a great way to start 2007, knowing that He is the one who loves us and keeps us in His care always. Let's resolve to walk according to His instructions daily.

Joshua 5 - A life separated for God

Click to read Joshua 5

Synopsis

The generation of Israel then were all born out of Egypt. The males had not been circumcised according to the Abrahamic covenant. This rite was important as it marked Israel's position as God's covenant people. Circumcision for God's people, unlike other culture who saw it as an entry into adulthood, was used as sign of following God. It signified the cutting off the old life and beginning a new one with God. That was why God instructed the new generation to go through the rite before taking the Promised Land.

40 years ago, the Israelites were frighten of the Ammonites and Canaanites. This time, it was the opposite (v1). Hearing the exploits of Israel with God's leading them was enough to cause fear in the Ammonite and Canaanite camps. And true enough, Israel was led into the battle by the angel of the Lord (v13-15).

Major verses

V1 - When the enemies heard about the power of God in leading Israel in their battles and especially with the crossing of the River Jordan on dry land, their hearts melted.

What I learnt - Our enemies will be overwhelmed when they know that it is God who is behind us. Let us not forget ourselves, that God is behind us and assures us of victory always.

V2-9 - The circumcision was to allow the nation to declare that they are leaving their old lives and to entering in to the new ones with God. Once the rite was over, God declared that He had rolled away the reproach of Egypt from them, thus assuring them of a new way ahead.

What I learnt - While we are not bound by the Abrahamic covenant that require all males to be circumcised, we are bound by a higher and better covenant with Jesus Christ. Still and more importantly, we need to circumcise our hearts and declare that we have a new life in Christ.

V10-12 - This was the third passover celebration the Israel was having since they left Egypt. The first one was filled with fear as the angel of death passed over them while still in Egypt. The second was at the foot of Mount Sinai 39 years ago. This one was the first celebration in the Promised Land. It was filled with joy. Also, with this act, God stopped providing manna to the nation as they could stay to enjoy the produce of the Promised Land, which were ready for planting and harvesting.

What I learnt - While God will take care of us when we are in need, prayer is not an alternative to preparation and faith is not an alternative to work. While God can and always does provide miraculously for His people, He also expects them to use their God-given talents, abilities and resouces to provide for themselves. We need to depend on God, but we must not be lazy.

V13-15 - The angel of the Lord came to lead the people into battle. Although Joshua was the leader of the people, he also knew how to respect Godly authority over him. He demonstrated this by falling face down in reverence and acknowledging God's leadership.

What I learnt - We must always respect Godly authority over our lives and in so doing, we affirm our reverence for the Lord Himself.

Summary

We need to circumcise our heart and separate our life for Him. The Lord wants to lead us into victory always. He expects us to revere and trust Him and act according to the abilities and resources that He had given to us.

Joshua 4 - Remember God's goodness and power always

Click to read Joshua 4

Synopsis - With 40,000 soilders crossing the river in battle formation (v13), the Israelites were ready for battle and to take the land. However, instead of launching an attack immediately, God commanded Joshua to have the people build a memorial with 12 stones picked up from the River Jordan. As insignificant as it may seem in their mission to conquer the land, building the memorial was important as God wanted His people to focus on Him and His leadership and power. In addition, the memorial was to be a constant reminder of the days that God led the people to cross the river on dry grounds and that the children would be told of it (v21-24) and thus learn about God.

Major verses

V4-7 - Joshua obeyed God's instruction to build the memorial and added the reason for it in V6 "to serve as a sign among you. In th future, when the children ask you "What do these stones mean? Tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenent ..."

What I learnt - While we can be busy doing the tasks that God gives to us, we must still set aside time and quiet moments to build our "memorial" to God's power and goodness. We must always remind ourselves and also our children of God's grace and mercy, power and love for us constantly.

V19 - 24 - Finally when the memorial was erected, Joshua gathered all the people together to proclaim the reason for it. This time, he specifically said that it was to tell their descendants that God helped them to cross the River Jordan in dry land, as He did with their fathers in the Red Sea. This was to let all the people of the world know of God's power and so that His people will always rever Him.

What I learnt - We also need to build a "memorial" for which we can be reminded of God; it may be special dates or special places to help our children learn about God's work in our life. Let us take time to tell them about God and His goodness. Retelling such stories will help keep memories of God's faithfulness alive.

Summary

To go forward successfully, we must constantly remind ourselves of God's power and leadership. Talking about these with our children will also keep them focused on God.

Joshua 3 - Another Miracle !

Read Joshua 3

Synopsis

All of Israel were ready and anxious to possess the Promised Land. But they had to be consecrated before taking the land. God had punished their fathers for their lack of faith and disobedience. Now, this new generation needed to be re-aligned with God and His holiness. V1-5 recorded their pre-entry rites ... consecrating and purifying themselves. In addition, specific commands were given for the people to follow the Ark as it is moved by the priests. The Ark is a iconic symbol of God's presence and power for the people.

This was spring time in Canaan, which means that the river was at its highest. God chose this time to perform the miracle to demonstrate his power to the people too.

Major verses

V2-4 - The people were asked to follow the Ark so that "you will know which way to go", since they had never been that way before.

What I learnt - Whenever God leads us, we need to focus on His leading. We must trust that He knows the way better than us, even, and especially, for the path that we have never walked before.

V6-8 - Once again, God assured Joshua that He will personally lead the nation into the Promised Land. God could have simply parted the River Jordan to create a dry path for the nation to cross over. But He needed the people to demonstrate their trust and faith in Him. As such, God instructed the people to follow the priests who were carrying the Ark. And more importantly, the priests had to put their feet into the rushing waters of the river before the miracle would happen (v8).

What I learnt - We need to demonstrate our faith in God by clear action on our part. Just as the priests had to put their feet into the gushing waters before the river opened up, we must take the first step to activate God's promises to us.

V9-13 - As eager as it was for the nation to posses the land, Joshua made sure that the people had time to listen to God's words before attempting the crossing. He made use of the chance to reassure the people as God had reassured him of His leading and presence.

What I learnt - Many times in life, we are caught up in the hussle and buzzle of life so much that we cannot be still and take in God's words. And in as many times, we suffer the consequences of not hearing His instructions. Let us learn from the Israelites the importance to listening to and reflect His words before we take decisions. By reminding ourself of God's goodness and promises, we will surely be successful in all that we put our hands to do.

V14-17 - When the priests reached the water's edge, they obviously saw that the river was flooded at its peak since it was harvest (spring) time. What if they became frightened and refused to trek into the gushing waters? The good news was that they trusted God completely and took that important first step of faith. Once their feet were in the water, the water stopped flowing and dry land appeared before the nation.

What I learnt - As much as God wants to lead us, He will not intrude into our decision to trust Him. We must always remember not to allow the outward circumstances to distract us from the goodness and promises of God. And to receive the full benefits, step out in faith, just as the priests carrying the Ark did. Only then, will we see the mighty power of God.

Summary

We need to consecrate our life before God. Thank God that this is done through and by our faith in Jesus' completed work at Calvary. Because of Him, we are counted as "righteouness of God" (2 Cor 5:21). As we encounter challenges, let us always remind ourselves of God's goodness and His promises. More importantly, we must learn how to step out in faith and act according to His word.
