1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. James 2:1
As I followed Selwyn Hughes' exposition on the book of James this month, the Holy Spirit prompted a check on my heart's spiritual condition.
James gave instructions in many areas of Christian living. One that struck me last week was what Selwyn termed as "spiritual snobbery".
As joint heir with our Lord Jesus, we are to be more like Him every day. We are to love others as we love ourselves. James pointed out in James 2:1-5 a common problem that plagues believers old and young, in the past and present - that problem is favoritism.
Selwyn wrote, "The sin of favoritism is prevalent in the Church these days too, only now it is not so obvious as it once was. Let's ask ourselves right now: Am I part of a clique in my church or fellowship? Do people see me as someone who accepts some people but rejects others? A clique has been defined as being 'where the "popular" people gather to assure each other that they really are.' Don't be a snob, is James' message to us today. Don't even be a snob about snobs. It's immature."
The Spirit checked me and prompted that I can fall into favoritism easily and unconsciously. As the leader of a large cell group, I have the responsibility to make sure that our group is not exclusive. I have the responsibility to always be inclusive and help my members to do the same.
Join me as I ask our Lord to probe our hearts to remove every bit of prejudice or cliquishness in us and to help us to always be inclusive, welcoming everyone that comes into our fold. For His glory !
God bless.
