Help me to be a good son!

Matthew 26:39, 42-44

39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

42 Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open.

44 So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again.

Jesus' last prayer at Gethsemane revealed that He struggled with His impending crucifixion. He was the Son of God when He revealed that He was to die for the sins of mankind. Now that the hour drew near, the burden and weight of His mission began to take its toil on Him. After all, He was all human at that point.

Noticed that He prayed the same prayer thrice. He pleaded God to let the suffering pass Him.

But Jesus was an obedient Son. Though He desired not to have to suffer the pain, He also wanted to do God's will. He struggled but at the end, He let God rule.

What about us? How often do we insist on our way despite knowing clearly that it is not God's way? How often do we leave God out of our decision? I regret that the answer for me is, "too often".

One of my cell member recently shared that he stopped praying to be a good husband. He also stopped praying to be a good father and a good Christian. I was puzzled and pushed him for a clarification. What he said changed my perspective.

"I now pray for God's help to be a good son (of God), for in doing so, I will then be a good husband, a good father and a good Christian!", my cell member said.

How true! If only we can become more like Jesus, God's obedient Son, we will be doing God's will every moment.

Consider your next prayer - ask the Holy Spirit's help to be a good son to our Heavenly Father!

God bless.

Steven
