Ready to take the Promised Land - Lessons from Joshua

Introduction

The book of Joshua tells the story of Israel's conquest and occupation of the Promised Land. Long overdue, the new generation of Jews was about to see God's provision of a new land, flowing with milk and honey, coming true. Let's learn together the valuable lessons from the chapters in this book

Overview of the book

The first 12 of the 24 chapters of the book tell the stories of the conquests made by the nation. The central theme is "The battle belonged to the Lord - it is not by men's capability that the enemies were defeated, but by His power." And as long as the people were obedient to God's instructions, victories came. In contrast, defeats visited them when they started to rely on their own intellect and decision-making. The crossing of the River Jordan, on dry ground and the battle of Jericho demonstrated that completely. In the same way, as shown in the later chapters, when disobedience entered into the nation through just one family, the whole nation suffered.

The last 12 books recorded the government and assignment of the land to the different tribes.

Major Themes

A number of major themes are expressed in this book:

1. Obedience to God brings victory.
2. Faith in God - faith begins with believing the He can be trusted.
3. God's guidance is most valuable in life - only by reading His word constantly, then can we be victorious in life.
4. Strong leaders are led by God - a good leader must obey God.

Major Lesson

To love God means more than just being enthusiastic about Him. We must complete all the work that He gives us to do and apply His instructions to every corner and facet of our life.

I will be sharing my learnings from Chapter 1 in my next posting .... watch out for it.
